As I lamented on multiple occasions, I have lost the ability to read a book - fiction, non-fiction, critical essay, poetry .. any type.
So I have adopted another technique - audio books. I religiously pay the subscription fees each month for audible. And I listen to some books. Some days. While I am walking.
Interestingly enough, one book I completed listening and was really captivated was 'My experiments with truth' - the autobiography of Gandhiji. Initially I was listening to Hindi version, then continued with English version.
The style of writing is good without being pedantic - which often happens with autobiographies. And more importantly it also educates us on the history of our freedom struggle.
After finishing that book, I have started to listening to 'the discovery of India'. Which is even better. Well, Nehru is a great writer and the subject matter is history. I am liking it.
So much so that, I searched around, downloaded a few books, discarded a few and finally have ended up with a nice pdf version of the book too. Plan to read it simultaneously.
Of course, we would like to criticize Gandhiji and Nehru quite often. Gandhiji was responsible for the division of the country. (But if there was no division, which country would have been the destination of all desh drohis? England?). Gandhiji was coddling muslims. Nehru was womanizer. He snatched the PM-giri from Sardar Patel. He did not promote our religion enough and promoted the minorities for vote bank etc.
But we can't deny the fact that they were great writers. Name a contemporary politician who is a good writer. May be there are one or two exceptions like Shashi Tharoor.
So, next few days would be read time with Nehru.
