Big Little Lies
At least let me write about the garbage I watch entire day, 365 days. That way my hands, my brain and may be even memory will be exercised - all of which are much needed workouts for my age. Ask any youtube health expert.
So this hoststar series is called 'Big little lies'. Great title - it is name of all of our lives.
But the story revolves around a murder. Not a serial killer kind of murder, not a gang war kind of murder, not even a whodonit kind of mystery. But a murder committed in drunk stupor and anger by five upper class, well respected ladies.
And the coverup. They say the man - husband of one of the ladies, fell down the stairs to his death. They do not specify that one of them pushed him.
But that lie worsens their lives. Already they are living in their own complicated lives. And the lie, the guilt, the fear of being caught makes their lives miserable.
There is one Samantha - a successful career lady living in all luxury. Married to a rich stock broker. But unfortunately life teaches her a hard lesson. Her husband is caught for securities fraud, jailed, bailed. And they have to apply for bankruptcy. Yes, life is cruel that way - because her motto in life was - I will not be not rich.
And to add salt to her wounds, it turns out her cheating husband was having illicit relationship with their nanny all this time.
He lost his money, her money and what little hope she had in life. And he was in his own happy place in a games room.
And there is Bonnie - an african american lady living the rebel life. Always trying to prove she is worthy, she is lovable. Because she had an abusive childhood, with a controlling mother. Who criticized her, hit her and scolded her for every little thing. So Bonnie did everything to prove her mother wrong - took one wrong decision after another.
Now she tells her mother who is in coma "I did not push that man, mom. I was pushing you".
Then there is Celeste whose husband was murdered. She was repeatedly abused by him, physically, mentally and always remained silent hoping that he will change. Believing that he loved her in spite of outer violence.
But on that fateful day she comes to know that this monster of a man had raped a woman and fathered her child.
She is trying to cope with the help of alcohol, many many pills - ambien etc, and physical relations with strange men.
Now her woes do not stop there. Her mother in law comes to live with her. Helping with the children, consoling her and supporting her.
But turns out, she was all the while spying on her using private investigators and collecting evidence on her unfitness to be a mother to her grandchildren.
And she sues her for custody of the grand children.
The friends realize that in the court, they might even ask her about the accident - asking whether Celeste's anger on her spouse made her to push him down the stairs.
And that happens. She answers in the negative. And wants to cross examine the mother in law.
So finally she wins the case - children are not taken away from her.
In the last scene, we see the ladies going towards the police station - apparently to confess.
I watched it in one day. Do you know, I have to set alarm for 30 minutes to force myself to read a physical book for 30 minutes. I can blame my "aged" eyes, which can not see the letters on the book not very clearly. You can't zoom here. I can blame my busy schedule. Ha, that was a joke.
Any way, I watched the second season from afternoon till 11:30 last night and feeling not so proud about it.
This too is an escapism - I very well know it. But can you blame me?
