Pride and prejudice and zombies( and nagins)
Ha, the title tells you that it will be a comic retake on Jane Austen's classic "Pride and prejudice."
That was the impression I got when I started watching the movie on TV. Who does not like a Victorian lifestyle with a sprinkle of 'undead'?
And my impression was strengthened when the narrator said that " the rich sent their children to study in Japan and wise sent them to China."
Even in this movie, Mr. Bennet has 5 daughters of marriageable age but no means to marry them off. So his wife is always on the look out of rich 'matches' for her daughters.
So far, so good. But where do zombies come into picture.
Narrator also says that Zombies or undead are always attacking the humans which makes it necessary for people to be always armed and well trained in sword fighting. Even girls! Yes, the all five Bennet girls are very good fighters and have swords and knives with them always.
Now the story line continues in this manner. The arrival of a two rich young men, Mrs. Bennets's plans of enticing these young men to marry her daughters, Elizabeth - second daughter being the smart one hating Mr. Darcy and so on.
See, there is no comedy at all. Instead there is lot of fighting between the living and dead, sorry undead. With Undead being defeated at the end of the film.
Then it occurred to me zombies, just like vampires reside or resided only in the western world.
Not very good in sea voyages? Could not walk on water because there will be no food on the way?
But we have a different version of unearthly - we have ichchadhari nagins (nagin - female snake). Of course we have had or we have read about rakshasas, brahma rakshasas and so on. But the current favorites are nagins.
They are called ichchadhari because they can take any form they want. And they invariably decide to take the form of belles wrapped in white sarees.
There is one more differences - if a zombie bites you, you become a zombie. If a vampire bites you, you become a vampire. But if a nagin bites you, you become - alas dead.
Nagins are after revenge. Of a previous birth most of the time. But zombies are after brains.
Why brains? At a time when un-undead are themselves reluctant to use brains. What would dead undead people do with brains? Learn some thing new? Like how to get enough food easily :) :)
