IRA and story of Dolours price

Lola Petticrew as Dolours in Say Nothing

The day they gave us freedom, they split us into two countries. Thus generating a continuous hatred, wars and disharmony.

The similar thing might have been done in Ireland too. But slightly differently. The Northern Ireland is still part of the their country, and southern Ireland is an independent country - Irish Republic.

Irish people too have faced centuries of exploitation, discrimination and abuse by English people. And Irish people have struggled for centuries to get back their freedom, to unify their country and to get equal rights.

Here too religion plays a role - the Irish are Catholic and British are Protestant. The cities are divided into catholic and protestant zones. And the jobs, houses all went to protestants.

And the catholic Irish people - they started IRA - a paramilitary organization, which bombed building, robbed banks and used different unsuccessful ways to topple the British government. Unsuccessfully.

One such IRA activist was Dolours Price. Born in a family of IRA members,  she fought their fight. Later she married a Hollywood star Stephen Rea.

The TV series 'Say Nothing' is her story and story of Irish struggle. And Price's story too.

She was jailed for 8 years for car bombings where she undertook hunger strike and was force fed. Once out of prison, she realized that the world has changed completely.

Most importantly, their leader Gerry Adams has changed. Now suddenly he is peacekeeper, he stands for elections. And he denies he was ever a member of IRA.

But his group member including Dolours have suffered and are still suffering. Dolours regrets her involvement in killings of touts - traitors to their cause.

The faces of those killed haunts her day and night. She becomes alcoholic. She gets divorced. She participates in Boston college tape project and tells her story with the promise that the story will be published only after her death.
