Patala loka

Maine suna hai aur whatsapp me padha hai. That there are 3 lokas in this universe- bhooloka inhabited by mortals (us humans), swargaloka where Gods reside and patala loka where rakshasas reside. That's what the police inspector says in the Amazon prime Hindi serial "Patala loka". Patala loka is where keede (insects) or poor people live. They live and die like insects - nobody bothers about them. But people bother about them only when they are central characters of a large conspiracy. A conspiracy to "assassinate" (his own words) a TV journalist Sanjeev Mehra. No, not by throwing ink on his car, but actual murder which involves guns and hired assassins. Sanjeev Mehra runs is a news anchor. But is surprisingly honest. And unsurprisingly has many powerful enemies. And his boss wants him to quit. But why would any one want to murder this journalist - he is after all a bhooloka vasi? And by the way, he finally realizes his folly and accepts that  TRP of the ch

Developing Kotlin

I just spend few minutes in Kotlin bootcamp from udacity once in a blue moon. All other times it is salaam stack overflow. The course from Udacity looks good though. But watching initial videos when you know a little bit is difficult. I am yet to master !! ? etc (of null, nullable and not nullable) But the best point we all tend to ignore is developers guide from android . In this guide, all the illustrations are given in both Java and Kotlin. But you have to unlearn first. I had taken many, many, many years to master listview and its adapter. Now the IDE design mode has put listview in legacy section and prefers recyclerview. No, sorry, no patience learn this new thing again.  Or you can do what everyone does. Keep these bookmarks ready and refer to them as and when you need them. But if you want to learn Kotlin with Jetpack, here is another course by udacity.

Another lame post, be warned. A Bangalore kid dreads asking the question "amma tindigenu?" - what's for breakfast? Because the answer invariably is chitranna, mosaranna, vangibath, pongal. All varieties of spiced rices. A way of using up the left over rice from previous meal. We havyaka women are more altruistic - at least in this department. We reserve this left over cooked rice for ourselves. For lunch - to be savored with a lame TV serial and spoon of pickle and a bowl of curds. But even our havyaka kids never ask "amma asarige entudu" - same question in our own dialect. Because they already the answer. It is always dosa - or as we prefer to call it - tellevu - a very thin dosa. We eat dosa every day - excluding festivals. Festival mornings are supposed to be purer - we can not eat cooked rice for breakfast. Yes - dosa is also cooked rice and hence impure. Unless you grind it with red cucumber - ensuring that not a drop of water is added to the batte

Disaster management

Let me tell you a personal story. Many times I face some problem with my laptop. Which has Linux OS. So to fix the problem, I google some solution. When that does not work, I get frustrated and try my own recipes. I remove some package, I disable some programs, I tinker and tinker and tinker. And the end result is invariably the same. My computer won't start. Or rather it will not show me login screen. And believe me there is no ctrl z for advanced mistakes. I can't actually undo the steps either. Because I don't remember all of them. So I do trial and error. And the errors never end. And finally after many hours of hard and stressful work, I fix it and wonder was it worth it? Now I think we are in a similar situation now. We were attacked by an unknown insect - no a much smaller creature. Unknown virus - for which we don't have cure, not any vaccine, not even complete knowledge about how it spreads. So we thought if we keep people locked inside their houses, c

Sing away the blues

Some days are more difficult than others. Shame on you. How can you say that? Soldiers, no, people are dying, not in the borders - but everywhere in the world. And you talk about your silly boredom, insecurity, depression etc. Yes, I can hear Arnab's voice echoing in my ears. I know, I sound such a shallow and inconsiderate person. But let me talk about what I do when I am blue. This may help some one, any one hopefully. One word. Music. I look back at songs from childhood and youth and listen to them using YouTube and try in vain to download them. And I keep humming them. So, may be when you are unhappy and you know it Sing aloud When you are sad and you know it Sing a song When you are miserable and you know it And you really want to stop it Sing a song Sing a song Sing a song Did you like this song Naguva nayana - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dajcwrykmf8 or this song. Lockdown 3.1

Who would have thought that the lock down will have a version number - with a major and minor number ? :) Any ways from today the extended - extended lock down has started. But we must accept the fact that the lock down might have to a large extent contained the virus. Compare our numbers with those of developed countries in western Europe of US of A! Yes, the lockdown 3.0 has started and the center put us - the Bangaloreans in red zone. So many of the relaxations would not have been applicable to us. Then the state put our wards in green zone so that many relaxations will apply. Then RWA put more constraints in place. :) But life looks much better - or freer. I see some vehicular movement in the fly over. Better at what cost? Don't ask that question, please. At this point we are willing to face any thing in place of lock down. More over we can not keep our metropolitan cities under lock down for ever (ignore the exceptions). And let the economy and poor people succumb to
